The application for the 2020 online UWC Short Course “UMOJA Unlocked: Coming Together to Build Community” is now open!
The global outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted UWC Short Courses. While we had planned to be convening at UWC East Africa in July for the 2020 edition of UMOJA, we have had to take a leap and move this year’s Short Course online for the first time with the aim of providing an opportunity for young people to unlock their own potential – and that of the world around them – during this lock down period.
UMOJA Unlocked will be held virtually from 8 August to 30 August 2020. The Short Course will allow participants to become global and local actors, while building a diverse community of change makers, exploring their own identity, and reflecting upon their understanding of the world.
UMOJA Unlocked will allow participants to explore and foster an understanding of the multiple, complex identities within a community by focusing on themes such as power and privilege. The Short Course will place emphasis on participants accumulating tools and resources to act as change makers in a sustainable manner, while accompanying them in identifying their own impact-generating projects.
The Short Course will follow the United World College’s model of experiential learning. It will thus be centred around innovative digital workshops, interactive learning, and an element of community engagement. The Course will equip participants to think critically, engage globally and become leaders in their own community.
We are looking for 15 participants aged 16 to 20 from all over the world. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who have not yet had a UWC experience. Anyone who is eager to learn and help others is welcome to apply!
UMOJA Unlocked will be delivered through weekly online sessions/workshops (primarily on Saturdays and Sundays between 10 am- 5pm GMT +3. There will also be an expectation for Individual and group work throughout the week, in addition to mid-week check-in calls with facilitators. The operating time zone for UMOJA Unlocked is Tanzania time (GMT +3). We have put together an exciting and dynamic program that will leverage the unique contributions of each participant to ensure that we can build a safe and exciting space for individual and collective growth.
The total cost of the online Short Course is 50 USD, however, financial constraints should not be a reason to forgo the chance of an application. A limited amount of data scholarships will be available to support successful applicants who may have trouble with the cost of accessing the internet.
Application Closing Date
The application deadline is 15 July, 2020. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We therefore encourage all interested individuals to apply as early as possible.
