Leaders for Health Equity Fellowship Program 2019 ( Fully Funded to Washington DC)

 

2019 Application Process ​

Fellows will be selected from the United States and the developing world based on prior commitment in the area of health equity and demonstrated leadership promise. The program will build and support a linked group of global multidisciplinary leaders equipped with the technical knowledge, skills, and network to advance health workforce equity in their communities, institutions, and professional circles. The program will select 10 U.S. and 5 international fellows per year..

PART 1 – DEMOGRAPHICS

Your personal information will only be used for the purpose of contacting you regarding your application. We will not share this information with any third parties.

You will be asked to provide information about you, your employer/work setting, professional field, etc.​​

Things to note are:

• country of citizenship (i.e. the country in which a person is born and has not renounced or lost citizenship or naturalized)
• country that you work and reside in (determines if you are an international or domestic applicant)

PART 2 – STATEMENT OF INTEREST

Please write a brief statement (no more than 500 words) addressing:

• The reasons you want to be a fellow, including a discussion of your major strengths and qualifications for the program.
• A description of your experience and/our contributions in the health equity field, either in your professional work or through community or volunteer service, and how they will contribute to your fellowship experience.
• Plans for continued development of your health equity leadership skills after you complete the fellowship. Explain how you will contribute to the development of health equity at the national, regional, or local level, in conjunction with your employer, and how you envision the fellowship experience will affect your overall career goals and direction.

PART 3 – PROJECT PROPOSAL

Please describe one health equity project you would like to complete during the fellowship term. The project should focus on a topic that is in line with issues that you and/or your organization(s) focus on. The project is a key part of the overall leadership learning experience and you will be coached regularly by the faculty team. Your project description should include the following:

• Introduction, Goal, & Vision: This section should include an overview of the health equity topic on which you would like to work, details on why this is important, and the location of the project (e.g. your work site). What is your goal for this project? What is your hopeful vision of the future and how will your project move you closer to this vision?

• Timeline: What clear, measurable aim can be accomplished during the fellowship? What is your projected completion date?
• Institutional Support: Describe any financial or in‐kind resources your home institution will make available to assist you to implement the proposed project ​during the fellowship.​ ​

PART 4 – SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Your application will not be complete without the following:

• Curriculum vitae (CV)
• Letter of recommendation
• Employer support form: This form must be completed by someone in a direct supervisory role and should:

–  This form must be completed by someone in a direct supervisory role
–  It confirms your employer’s support of your participation in the fellowship program
–  It confirms their willingness to serve as your advisor, assisting with your growth as you pursue a focus on change

• Two professional references who may be contacted in the final selection process* (One must be from your current employer/organization.)

​*Note: The Leaders for Health Equity program recognizes that some communities and leaders may face the threat of discrimination when advocating for equitable treatment. If you believe you are facing extenuating circumstances that prohibit you from completing certain elements of the application, we ask that you complete the application to the best of your ability. Please note that your application will receive full consideration even if certain elements are missing, e.g. letter of recommendation from your employer and/or the employer support form. Your description of extenuating personal circumstances should address why you are unable to submit certain elements of the application.

PART 5 – VOLUNTARY SELF-IDENTIFICATION

Submission of this information is completely voluntary.

We are dedicated to building a diverse fellowship program and this information will help inform our recruitment efforts. Refusal to provide it will not affect your application. Responses will remain confidential within the LHE program.

Who Can Apply?

Individuals who:

• Want to become global leaders and better understand the foundations of health inequity and have the knowledge, skills, and courage to build more equitable health systems and organizations
• ​Are early to mid-career professionals
• Are currently engaged in health-related work in any profession
• Are experienced with social accountability issues
• Currently in leadership or position has potential for leadership

The Leaders for Health Equity program is designed to bring together the many diverse industries and professions that influence health and wellbeing including, but not limited to art, law, business, academia, government, journalism, social enterprise, research, media, housing, and health care delivery. 

 

Selection Procedure

SELECTION CRITERIA

• Strength of statement of interest, including past ​accomplishments that demonstrate a strong commitment to health equity
• ​Quality of proposed project
• ​​Strength of recommendation
• Letter of support from employer
• ​​Result of interview(s)

 

Program Expectations

Selected fellows will need to:

• attend 4 in-person convening’s throughout the year = 5 week time commitment
• participate in the online curriculum, that includes 1) biweekly online classes​, 2) individualized coaching, 3) peer mentoring, and 4) team-based learning = 12-16 hours/month
• be proficient in the English language
• remain in their place of employment for the duration of the program

Please note that all educational experiences and travel expenses related to participation in the fellowship will be covered by the program.
